Wild koalas usually get all the water they need from the eucalyptus leaves, from dew on the leaves, and when it rains

Koala Fact No. 16

Koalas rarely drink water.

This amazing fact about koalas is even how they got their name. The aboriginals knew from tens of thousands of years ago that koala did not come down to drink. So they named him with a word that means ‘dry’ or ‘no water’.

Koalas get the water they need from the eucalyptus leaves. These leaves are about half water.

Koalas kidneys are specially adapted to deal with very little water.

They also take advantage of dew and raindrops to get a bit extra.
